National Research Agenda

The National Research Agenda of Papua New Guinea identifies seven key Strategic Direction Themes that guide research and development efforts in the country. These themes encompass various aspects of national development and are vital for shaping the future of Papua New Guinea. Here are the themes along with brief descriptions for each:

  1.  Human Capital, Health, Youth, Gender: This theme focuses on improving the overall well-being of the population by investing in human capital development, enhancing healthcare systems, empowering youth, and addressing gender disparities. Research in this area aims to promote health, education, and gender equity.
  2. Wealth Creation: Wealth creation is crucial for sustainable economic growth. This theme emphasizes research and innovation in areas such as agriculture, industry, and entrepreneurship to foster economic development, job creation, and poverty reduction.
  3. Institutional Development and Service Delivery: Effective institutions and efficient service delivery are essential for good governance and citizen well-being. Research in this theme aims to enhance governance structures and improve the quality and accessibility of public services.
  4. Security and International Development: This theme addresses national security concerns and international development partnerships. Research efforts here are directed toward ensuring the safety and stability of the nation while engaging in productive international collaborations for mutual growth.
  5. Environment and Climate: In the face of environmental challenges and climate change, research in this theme is geared toward conservation, sustainable resource management, and climate resilience. This involves studying the environment’s health and its impact on communities.
  6. Spiritual Cultural Society: Papua New Guinea’s rich cultural diversity is celebrated in this theme, emphasizing the preservation and promotion of indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. Research seeks to empower communities to safeguard their heritage and identities.
  7. Planning Integration Control: Effective planning, integration, and control mechanisms are critical for harmonizing development efforts. This theme underscores research in areas of policy formulation, coordination, and monitoring to ensure that national strategies are implemented efficiently. These Strategic Direction Themes collectively provide a comprehensive framework for research and development in Papua New Guinea, addressing key aspects of societal, economic, and environmental well-being while honouring the nation’s cultural heritage and ensuring efficient governance and planning.
